Late Basket Lifts Minot State Over Wildcat Women, WSC Drops Fourth Straight

MINOT, ND – Saturday’s NSIC cross division doubleheader for the Wayne State College basketball teams was a women’s only game due to COVID-19 protocols with the Minot State University men.

From the Minot State Dome, Wayne State College visited Minot State University during a women’s only contest.

The Minot State women defeated Wayne State College, 71-70 to improve to 6-10 (4-5) while WSC fell to 7-8 (4-7).

Minot State’s Amber Stevahn scored with 8.9 seconds left as two Wildcats each had a shot late to win the game for WSC.

During the women’s only game, Wayne State College led 21-18 at the end of the first quarter as Minot State answered with a 13-12 second. WSC led 33-31 at the break. Wayne State College outscored the Beavers, 22-17 in the third as Minot State never went away with a 23-15 fourth. Final favored Minot State, 71-70.

Four double figure scorers again paced Wayne State College back-to-back nights led by senior Kylie Hammer (7-15 FG/2-4 3PT/1-1 FT) with 17 points and two steals. Junior Logan Hughes (5-14 FG/0-2 3PT/3-4 FT) added 13 points and three assists; freshman Maya Fitzpatrick (5-8 FG/0-1 3PT/1-2 FT) finished with 11 points, eight rebounds (five offensive), three steals and two assists as junior Lauren Zacharias (3-8 FG/2-5 3PT/2-2 FT) poured in 10 points with seven rebounds (three offensive) and two assists.

Other scoring came from junior Kassidy Pingel with seven points and seven rebounds as freshmen Abby Kopecky (five boards/three offensive), Tate Norblade (two steals) and Avery Kallman (five rebounds/two offensive) all scored four points.

WSC shot 28-68 (41.2%) from the field, 4-17 (23.5%) from behind the arc and 10-13 (76.9%) from the foul line.

Minot State was led in scoring by Stevahn with 25 points and seven rebounds while Janie Wunderlich added 11 points. Minot State University played seven of their eight players they suited up.

The Beavers finished 26-60 (43.3%) from the floor, 7-24 (29.2%) from the three-point line and 12-17 (70.6%) at the charity stripe.

Wayne State College scored four points off 11 Minot State turnovers while the Beavers had 17 points off 15 Wildcat turnovers. WSC won the battle in the paint (38-28) and bench scoring (12-10) as the Beavers won the fast break scoring (9-6). Wayne State out rebounded Minot State, 43-31 (16-8 offensive) which led to 10 second chance scoring compared to nine points by Minot State.

Wayne State College will return to Rice Auditorium to host two more North Division opponents this weekend. The Wildcats will host St. Cloud State University on Friday, January 21 at 5:30/7:30 p.m. as well as Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, January 22 at 3:30/5:30 p.m. with the women’s games moving back to being played first followed by the men’s game for the remainder of the season.
