COLUMBUS – Wayne High took part in their second-to-last non-District game when the Blue Devils visited Columbus Lakeview Friday night.
The Vikings were coming off a pair of road wins as WHS recently won their first shutout win since 2016 when Wayne won 48-0 hosting David City.
Wayne High was forced to punt seven times as Columbus Lakeview scored two of their four rushing touchdowns from over 48 yards. The Vikings won 27-6 to win their fourth game in a row to improve to 4-0 on the season as the Blue Devils dropped to 2-2.
From Columbus Lakeview High School, both teams were held to a pair punts in the first quarter. But, it was the Vikings who struck first off a 48-yard rushing touchdown from senior Lucas Thatcher with 8:51 to play in the opening quarter. Following a missed PAT, Lakeview led 6-0.
Wayne High then answered on the next possession taking a 10+ drive down the field capped off by a 27-yard rushing touchdown from senior Juan Vergara 10 seconds into the second quarter. But, following a failed two-point conversion the game was tied 6-6.
Columbus Lakeview followed suit with a 69-yard drive that ended on a fourth and goal one-yard rushing touchdown by senior quarterback Cadge Janssen. The Vikings botched the PAT which led to a two-point conversion to lead 14-6 with 7:52 to play into the half.
Wayne’s Senior Marcus Fertig picked off Lakeview right before half to trail, 14-6.
Following a punt by Wayne and a Lakeview turnover on downs, the Blue Devils were in Vikings territory before an interception stalled the drive with under 7 minutes to play in the third quarter. Columbus Lakeview then drove the final 39 yards and scored from two-yards out by senior back-up quarterback Jaden Johnson. Following a blocked PAT, Lakeview led 20-6.
