Lakeview Downs Wayne High In Five Sets

COLUMBUS – A Saturday afternoon Halloween showdown featured a volleyball team in search of a third straight trip to the state tournament while it’s been since 1981 for their opponent.

From Columbus Lakeview High School in Columbus, #12 Wayne High visited #5 Columbus Lakeview in the C1-5 District Final.

For the second time this, a volleyball team from Columbus took Wayne High to five sets as the Blue Devils fell to 0-2 in those matches. The Viqueens advance to state for the first time since 1981 improving to 28-5 while Wayne High fell to 24-9.

#5 Columbus Lakeview defeated #12 Wayne in five sets (23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 26-28 and 15-5).

Lauren Pick finished with 34 kills and 23 digs, to go along with two solo blocks, followed by Emily Longe with nine kills and Rubie Klausen added six kills. Sydney Redden posted 30 digs and the lone service aces; Kiara Krusemark tallied 41 set assists, a solo block and 10 digs as Reagan Backer had 17 digs.

Lakeview finished with four players in double figure kills. Lilly Rowe had 19, Maddi Vogt added 14 while Mallori Kucera and Katee Korte both finished with 13. Rowe tallied five blocks, Josie Bentz and Kucera both had four blocks and Janssen finished with three blocks (one solo). The Viqueens had 16 service errors but eight aces.

The 2020 NSAA State Volleyball Championships will be played at the Pinnacle Bank Arena from Wednesday, November 4 – Saturday, November 7. A change in the format for Class C1 will start their opening round at 2 p.m. during session II on Wednesday.

C1-6 (Kearney HS): #6 Syracuse won in five sets over #11 Sidney (5-16, 25-10, 21-25, 18-25, 15-8)

C1-7 (Kearney HS): #7 Lincoln Lutheran won in four sets over  #10 Ogallala (25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 25-13)

C1-8 (Boone Central): #8 Broken Bow swept #9 Oakland-Craig (25-19, 25-20, 25-23)
