Janke Finishes Runner-Up In NSAA Girls State Individual Bowling Championships, Starzl Places Sixth In Boys Division

LINCOLN – Top individuals bowlers across the state took part in state competition to open a series of three consecutive days at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln.

Girls singles began the morning moving into the afternoon while boys singles began at 2 p.m. with their qualifying round Monday afternoon.

For Wayne High, four girls and three boys took part in the 2021 NSAA Singles Championships.

District champion Jamie Janke earned the #2 seed in the individual singles championship bracket after bowling a 741 in the qualifying round. The cut-off at #8 was Hayleigh Johnson of Fremont who totaled a 654 while the #1 seed was Madison Henderson of Columbus finishing with an 801 in the qualifying round.

Among the top eight in bracket play, Janke defeated #7 Taya Berry of Lexington (403-249) before topping #3 Claire Busch of Papillion-La Vista South (427-401). In the finals, Janke suffered a 342-310 loss to #1 Madison Henderson of Columbus. Henderson won her first-round match (364-306) and semifinal (352-340).

Janke finished with an overall better average of 190 compared to Henderson’s 176.33. Janke totaled 1,140 pins in bracket while state champion Henderson finished with 1,058 total pins.

Andi Belt finished 14th in the qualifying round with a 625; Jersi Jensen took 20th with a 586 while Brianna Nissen placed 24th with a 555 out of 42 bowlers.

Other area bowlers included Rebekah Pinkelman of Hartington-Newcastle (21st – 577), Brieann Bruns of Thurston-Cuming (30th – 537) and Callie Rabbass of Thurston-Cuming (38th – 503).

In the boys division, Calvin Starzl placed eighth in the qualifying round by four pins with a 722. In bracket play, #1 Cole Macaluso of Fremont eliminated Starzl, 491-324. Starzl’s score of 324 was good enough to put him in sixth place in the boys individual tournament.

Other Blue Devils who placed among the 47 individual bowlers were Tanner Sievers who finished 15th with a 689 while Brogan Foote placed 24th with a 646.

Colin Potts of Hartington-Newcastle finished 10th with a 716 (six pins from eighth), Luke Pellatz of Plainview followed closely in 11th place with a 715, Derek Rix of Plainview took 27th (637), Trevor Doerr of Plainview (31st – 604) and William Vuchetich (36th – 593) closed out the area results among the 47 bowlers.


Next up for NSAA State Bowling will be the boys division on Tuesday, February 9. The Blue Devil boys received the #5 seed (13-7) and will open with #4 Millard North (18-6) at 9 a.m. with the winner or loser next facing #1 Fremont (16-1) or #8 Lexington (8-12) at 10 a.m. The other half of the bracket will feature #3 Seward (15-3) vs. #6 Bellevue West (15-5) and #2 Lincoln Pius X (18-1) vs. #7 Columbus (7-11).

NSAA Girls Division Bowling State Championships are scheduled for Wednesday, February 10. Wayne High earned the #1 seed with their 16-2 record and will open with #8 Bellevue West (8-10) at 9 a.m. The winner or loser would next face the winner or lose of either #4 Lexington (17-3) or #5 Millard West (17-2) at 10 a.m.

The other half of the bracket will feature #3 Papillion-La Vista South (18-4) vs. #6 Lincoln Pius X (10-9) and #2 Seward (15-3) vs. #7 Columbus (10-6).
