Howells-Dodge Holds Off Wakefield In A Nail Biter

HOWELLS – A battle between two of Class D1’s best teams had little separation on Friday night as Howells-Dodge defeated Wakefield 30-28. On the opening drive of the ball game Wakefield fumbled giving Howells-Dodge excellent field position at the Wakefield 32. Six plays later the Jaguars took the lead on a six-yard rushing touchdown from sophomore fullback Levi Belina. On Howells-Dodge next possession it was the Jaguars who fumbled inside their own ten-yard line that was recovered by Wakefield. Justin Erb punched it in for the Trojans tying the game at 8 apiece to end the first quarter.

Howells-Dodge used two big touchdown plays from star running back Luke Rocheford to take the lead going in to halftime. One from 33 yards out and the other from 63 yards away. Wakefield did score with another Erb touchdown run with 2:51 remaining in the opening half making the halftime score 22-16. Starting quarterback for Howells-Dodge Darrin Pokorny left the game with a left shoulder injury and did not return.

It took Howells-Dodge no time to score in the second half using another big play from Rocheford and the Jags went up 30-16. Wakefield chipped away at the deficit with a five-yard score from QB Blake Brown and another touchdown run by Erb with 5:50 remaining in the game. The ensuing two-point conversion was defended well by Howells-Dodge and Erb was stopped short keeping the score at 30-28. Wakefield got the ball back one last time but could not convert on a fourth down to keep the drive alive and the Jaguars used up the rest of the clock and took a knee to end the ball game with a two-point advantage.

Howells-Dodge is now 3-0 on the season with a bye week ahead of them before traveling to Lutheran High Northeast on September 27th. Wakefield, now 1-1 on the year will play Lutheran High Northeast in Wakefield next week with coverage of that game on Big Red Country 104.9 starting with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
