High School Athletes, Coaches Invited To Sign-Up For Shot Put & Discus Camp

WAYNE – High School aged-students in northeast Nebraska are invited to attend a track and field throws camp in early July.

According to a release from head Wayne State College women’s and men’s track & field coach, Marlon Brink, WSC will be hosting a camp for shot put and discus on Friday, July 9.

From 9 a.m. until noon, athletes in grades 9 – 12 are invited to improve their throwing skills from the outdoor throws field (north of the baseball field on the campus of Wayne State College). This is a developmental clinic to help become a better athlete and coach. The clinic is designed to teach techniques, offer constructive criticism and give assistance in a workout environment.

Cost to attend is $50 prior to Tuesday, July 6 with a limit of 20 spots available as the price will increase to $75 at 11:59 p.m. on July 6. Cost for coaches to register is $30 which includes a t-shirt.

This event is online registration only as no walk-up or day of camp registration will be accepted.

Check-in will last from 8:30 – 9 a.m. on July 9 as a warm-up session will follow until 9:15 a.m. before splitting into groups for shot put and discus. Drills and throwing will take place for each event from 9:15 – 10:30 a.m., a break will last from 10:30 – 10:45 a.m. before drills and throwing analysis will conclude the day from 11 a.m. until noon.

Implements will be provided as workout clothes and throwing shoes are being requested to bring.

Carly Fehringer, head WSC throws coach will be joined by current women’s and men’s throwers to lead the camp.

Coach Fehringer is starting her second year as the WSC throws coach. In her first year at WSC, Fehringer guided McKenzie Scheil to a pair of runner-up finishes in the weight throw (indoors) and hammer throw (outdoors). She also coached athletes to 12 top ten all-time WSC performances.

Fehringer was a standout thrower at Wayne State from 2011-2014. With the Wildcats, she was a four-time All-American and seven-time national qualifier (3rd – 2014 Hammer Throw, 2nd 2014 Weight Throw, 2nd, 2013 Hammer Throw, and 3rd 2013 Weight Throw). She was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and Wayne State College Female Athlete of the Year in 2014.

While volunteering at Wayne State prior, Fehringer continued her own post-collegiate career. A decorated post-collegiate athlete, Fehringer qualified for four U.S. Championships in the hammer throw while also competing in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the same event. Fehringer was inducted into the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame in October of 2019.
