Hartington Cedar Catholic, Ponca Both 2-0 After Opening Day Of Wakefield-Invite

WAKEFIELD – Day one of the Wakefield-Invite is complete as teams will be back in action for their final pool play matches Saturday morning before gearing up for bracket play in the afternoon.

From the Wakefield Community School main and auxiliary gyms, eight teams were in action.

In Pool A: BRLD defeated Wakefield-Allen (15-25, 25-13, 25-22); Hartington Cedar Catholic won over BRLD (15-25, 25-17, 25-23); HCC over Pierce (26-24, 25-16) and Wakefield-Allen topped Pierce (25-23, 25-22).

With the split, Wakefield-Allen is now 4-5; HCC is 6-3; BRLD is 6-4; and Pierce is now 1-6.

In the loss to BRLD, Wakefield-Allen was led by Alli Jackson, Hayden Ekberg and Jordyn Carr all with five kills. Dig leaders went to Aishah Valenzuela with 31 digs, Abby Heiman with 17, Carly Dickens (16) and Alex Arenas (12) while Dickens recorded 21 set assists.

From the win over Pierce, Ekberg tallied six kills with Jackson and Arenas following with five each. Valenzuela was the dig leader as Dickens added 20 set assists.

Pool A Saturday matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Wakefield-Allen vs. Cedar Catholic while Pierce will face BRLD at 9:30 a.m.

 

In Pool B: Lutheran High Northeast swept Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (25-18, 25-11); Ponca swept LHNE (25-21, 25-19); Ponca swept Homer (25-16, 25-20) and LCC swept Homer (25-23, 25-20).

Ponca improved to 6-1; Lutheran High Northeast is now 6-4; LCC is 3-2 and Homer fell to 1-6.

For Ponca in the match against LHNE, Kaci Day paced the Indians with 13 kills while Josie Reid posted a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 11 digs. Morgan Nelson recorded 30 set assists.

During Ponca’s second match with Homer, Alyssa Crosgrove, Reid and Day all had five kills while Ellie McAfee recorded a team-high eight digs. Nelson added 20 set assists and three service aces.

Saturday Pool B matches will feature LCC vs. Ponca at 8:30 a.m. followed by Lutheran High Northeast vs. Homer.
