HEBRON – A northeast Nebraska high school football team made the roughly 190 mile drive south to open Class D1 playoff competition.
Thayer Central in Hebron welcomed in Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Thursday afternoon during the opening round of the #6 hosting #11 matchup in the east bracket.
With cool temperatures and a slight breeze throughout the game, it was the strength of the run overpowering the passing game.
Eight of the 10 touchdowns (eight two-point conversions) were rushing for LCC as the Bears won 76-36. Junior Evan Haisch scored seven times, six coming on the ground. Both teams are now 6-3 as Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will await their pairing for the round of 16 with all teams who advance being re-seeded across Class D1 next Friday, October 30.
Following a turnover on downs for LCC, Thayer Central scored on a one-play, 69-yard passing touchdown from senior Logan Wiedel to senior Andrew Heinrichs. Senior Luke Templin scored the two-point conversion with 7:36 to play in the opening quarter.
Junior Lucas Rasmussen then took the ensuing kickoff return back for six 10 seconds later. Haisch ran in the two-point conversion to knot the game up at 8-8. Haisch then scored from 18-yards with 3:56 to play in the first quarter as senior Nolan Ohlrich ran in the two-point score. LCC led 16-8.
Moving into into the second, LCC again turned the ball over on downs in Titan territory which led to a 65-yard passing score from Wiedel to senior Trey Fischer. The two-point try was no good as the Bears remained ahead 16-14 with 8:48 left in the second.
Junior quarterback Evan Schmitt then answered on a one-yard score before passing the ball to sophomore Jake Rath (two-pt. conversion) to extend the LCC lead. The Bears led 24-14 with 4:50 left in the first half.
Thayer Central then put the ball into the endzone on the ground when sophomore Cameron Schulte walked in from seven-yards out. The two-point try was failed as LCC remained ahead 24-20.
LCC closed out the first half with back-to-back scores in the final minute. Haisch ran in from five-yards (two-pt. failed) and following an Ohlrich interception, Schmitt hooked up with Haisch on a 35-yard score. Junior Deagan Puppe caught the two-point conversion to put LCC up 38-20 at the break.
Both teams then scored in the third quarter when Thayer Central’s Wiedel found Fischer on a 16-yard score (Schulte two-pt. score) and Haisch carried the ball in from a yard out for the Bears (Ehlers two-pt. score) to end the quarter with LCC leading 46-28.
Haisch then put the game away three scores in the final quarter each from 11-yards or less with 8:39, 5:02 and 4:47 left in the game. Rasmussan also scored from 70+ as two-point conversions came from Puppe twice and Ohlrich once more.
Wiedel hooked up with Fischer for the third time (22-yards) in the final quarter with 8:16 left as Heinrichs scored the two-point conversion.
Schmitt, Ohlrich and Puppe all had interceptions.
