GRAND ISLAND – A best of three series opened Friday afternoon where #11 Wayne High’s four-run sixth inning couldn’t hold up against a five-run seventh inning for #6 Grand Island Central Catholic who won game one in walk-off fashion.
From Veteran’s Sports Complex in Grand Island, the B-6 District Softball Final featured #11 Wayne High at #6 Grand Island Central Catholic during a best-of-three series.
During the opening game, Grand Island Central Catholic drove in two runs in the home half of the third before Wayne answered in the top of the fourth with two of their own runs. Tied at 2-2 in the sixth, and the Blue Devils recorded a four-run inning to lead 6-2. The Crusaders poured in five runs in the seventh to win game one, 7-6. GICC improves to 22-9 while WHS fell to 20-8.
Taytum Sweetland singled twice, drove in three runs and scored twice while Kierah Haase singled three times and scored twice for Wayne. Hope O’Reilly singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored as Mikaela McManigal singled and drove in a run. Hailey Schroeder also scored.
Kendall Dorey suffered the loss in six and two-thirds allowing seven earned runs off 10 hits while striking out and walking three batteres each.

All three classes (A, B and C) will compete in the NSAA State Softball Tournament from the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings between Wednesday, October 14 – Friday, October 16.
