GACC Girls Dominate, Wayne Boys Use Solid Fourth Quarter Defense To Hold On For Home Victory

WAYNE – With a home holiday basketball tournament approaching early next week, the Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams welcomed in another conference opponent.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, WHS hosted Guardian Angels Central Catholic during a regular season Mid State Conference showdown Tuesday.

The GACC girls won 68-25 while the Wayne boys defeated the Bluejays, 50-41.

During the girls game, GACC used a pair of 22-point quarters while Wayne High only scored nine first half points to trail 44-9. WHS outscored the Bluejays 12-9 in the third before GACC won the fourth, 15-4. Final again favored GACC 68-25 improving to 7-1 while Wayne High fell to 3-5.

Junior Mia Nelsen paced Wayne High off the bench with eight points while junior Rubie Klausen, junior Mady Sievers, sophomore Brooklyn Kruse and senior Emily Longe all scored three points. Junior Kiara Krusemark and freshman Katy Jones both finished with two points as junior Mikaela McManigal tacked on a point.

All 14 players who suited up for GACC scored. Junior Kassidy Kaup led the Bluejays in scoring off the bench with 16 points while senior starter Brenna Rief added 15 points. Senior Brandi Doernemann (fouled out) and freshman Kelsey Steffen both scored six points, junior Taylor Timmerman tacked on four points while junior Sophia Hass, junior Kate Gnad, sophomore Leah Jansen and sophomore Brynn Baumert all scored three points. Junior Livia Hunke, junior Erica Engelmeyer, sophomore Reese Throener and freshman Jocelynn Skoda all had two points as freshman Isabel Hass finished with a point.

From the boys contest, GACC held an early 11-8 first quarter lead while WHS took the lead going into the locker room thanks to a 16-11 second. Wayne High led 24-22 at the break. Both teams scored nine points in the third as the Blue Devils won the fourth, 17-10 and the game 50-41. Wayne High improves to 7-1 while the Bluejays fell to 2-4.

A trio of Blue Devils finished with double digit scoring led by junior Tanner Walling with 16 points, sophomore Daniel Judd with 12 points and junior Brandon Bartos poured in 10 points. Senior Nolan Hunke added four points while sophomore Alex Phelps, senior Jacob Kneifl and sophomore Sedjro Agoumba all had two points. Seniors Treyton Blecke and Colton Vovos both tacked on a point.

The Blue Devils shot 10-24 from the foul line.

Senior Ben Ulrich stole the show for GACC with 24 points. Senior Brendan Rief added eight points, junior Nate Niewohner tallied seven points as senior Tobias Steffensmeier and senior Cody Steffen both scored a point.

GACC finished 5-9 from the foul line.

The Wayne High girls and boys are off until the 2020 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout between Monday, December 28 – Wednesday, December 30. WHS will face Homer at 5 p.m. next Monday.
