Ben Miles, son of former LSU head coach Les Miles, is leaving the Nebraska football program.
Miles, a 6-foot-1, 210 pound fullback, announced his decision on Twitter.
“Publicly, I would like to thank Coach (Mike) Riley and his staff for recruiting me and giving me such a great opportunity to play at Nebraska,” Miles wrote. “Also I’d like to thank Coach (Scott) Frost and his staff. I’ve enjoyed learning from them through out spring ball.”
Earlier this spring, running backs coach Ryan Held let it slip that fullbacks, a position held in high regard in Nebraska, doesn’t really exist in Scott Frost’s offense.
“The fullback is probably not a position — as long as they want us here at Nebraska — that will be a position,” Held said in March. “We want big, long tight ends that can run and we can split them out and do different things that would do the same thing as a traditional fullback, but now you have more length. Trust me, I love the fullback position. It’s just not what we do.”
Tight ends coach Sean Beckton said this spring Miles was not working out at tight end.
Miles’ transfer leaves Nebraska with 87 scholarship players, none of which are fullbacks. He’s the first transfer since the end of spring football in April.
Coming out of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Miles was ranked as one of the top fullbacks in the 2017 class. He previously held offers from Boston College, LSU, Michigan State and Purdue.
