Four Blue Devils Named To Mid State Conference Softball Team

WAYNE – A trio of Wayne High softball players landed first team recognition while another was tabbed honorable mention among the Mid State Conference softball teams.

According to a release from Wayne Community Schools, all five conference teams were represented.

Juniors Kendall Dorey and Taytum Sweetland along with sophomore Brooklyn Kruse were listed as First Team while junior Virginia Kniesche earned honorable mention All-Conference.

Kendall Dorey was the top performer at the plate with 42 hits, 24 singles, nine doubles, eight home runs, a triple and 46 RBI. Brooklyn Kruse paced the team in runs scored with 30 while adding 25 hits, 17 singles, four doubles, four home runs and 29 RBI.

Sweetland posted 23 hits during her junior season with 19 singles, four doubles, 19 RBI and 19 runs scored as Kniesche added 25 hits being 21 singles, two doubles, two triples 15 RBI and 29 runs scored.

Dorey also worked all 145 innings pitched for WHS this past season.

During the Mid State Conference Tournament on October 3 hosted by GACC in West Point, #2 Wayne suffered an opening round loss to #3 O’Neill, 7-3. WHS then defeated Pierce, 11-1 and topped Boone Central, 14-1 in the third-place game.

#1 Guardian Angels Central Catholic defeated Boone Central, 8-0 and topped O’Neill, 9-0 in the championship game.

Wayne High suffered a pair of losses in the Class B District Final of 7-6 and 15-2 to Grand Island Central Catholic on October 9. The Blue Devils ended their season at 20-9.

For #1 GACC, they won the Class C State Softball Tournament after falling to #8 Central City in the opening round, 6-4. The Bluejays then won six straight in two days including a pair of wins over #5 Kearney Catholic of 7-3 and 12-0 to finish the season at 29-3.

GACC led the All-Conference Team with four first teamers and two honorable mention; followed by Wayne with three first team and one honorable mention; Boone Central had three on First Team; Pierce had two First Team and one honorable mention as O’Neill finished with a First Team and honorable mention honoree.
