WICHITA, KS – The Wayne State College baseball team continued their four-game series Sunday afternoon against Newman.
Back at McCarthy Field in Wichita, Kansas for game three of the series, first game Sunday afternoon, Newman won the second inning with a 2-1 score. Wayne State College then poured in a nine-run third inning before Newman answered with a four-run fifth. WSC led 10-6 entering the final two innings where the ‘Cats scored two runs in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh to win 16-6.

Five home runs paced Wayne State College in the Sunday victory led by seniors Tanner Simons and David Janes with three hits each. Simons recorded two home runs and three RBI while Janes singled three times and added two RBI. Junior Travis Miller homered twice and drove in four runs while sophomore Peyton Barnes added a single and home run and two RBI. Junior Zane Zitek and sophomore Bryce Bisenius each singled twice while junior Kyle Thompson and junior CJ Neumann both doubled.
Junior Charles Hasty picked up the win (1-1) in four and two-thirds allowing six runs (four earned) off of nine hits while striking out three batters and walking two. Senior Spencer Johnson worked a third of an inning as junior Jordan Mehl pitched two innings striking out one batter as both didn’t allow a run or hit in the final two and a third innings.
In the final game of the series, pitchers took control during the first three innings before Newman scored a run in the fourth and outscored WSC 2-1 in the sixth. The game was still close with both teams bringing two runs across the plate in the seventh, but Newman posted a six-run eighth inning to lead 11-3. Wayne State College was only able to score two runs in the ninth but fell 11-5 to now sit 2-6 on the season while Newman improved to 5-9.

Five different Wildcats recorded a hit as Kyle Thompson led the way with a home run and two RBI while sophomore Jackson Petersen doubled and drove in two runs. Barnes added a double while Janes singled and drove in a run.
Sophomore Lawson Zenner suffered the loss (0-1) in six innings of work allowing three runs (two earned) off of seven hits while striking out five batters and walking one. Senior Adam Poldberg pitched an inning allowing two earned runs off of three hits while striking out one batter. Spencer Johnson faced four batters and allowed four earned runs off of three hits as senior Brady Johnson worked an inning allowing two runs (one earned) off of one hit while walking two batters and striking out one.
The Wayne State College baseball team will continue their road trip in Kansas on Tuesday, March 6. WSC will visit Pittsburg State at 1/3 p.m.
