FAYETTE, IA – After splitting road games last weekend on Saturday and Sunday, the Wayne State College women’s basketball team took back to the road Friday evening.
From Dorman Gymnasium on the campus of Upper Iowa University, WSC traveled to Fayette, Iowa.
With the game featuring five ties and two lead changes, Wayne State held off Upper Iowa 84-79. WSC improves to 3-4 (2-3 NSIC) while the Peacock women fell to 1-6 (0-5 NSIC).
The ‘Cats jumped ahead in the first quarter, 25-19 while adding to their lead in the second, 24-19. At the break, WSC was up 49-38. Upper Iowa outscored WSC 19-15 in the third and 22-20 in the fourth but Wayne State held on for the 84-79 road win.
Four of the five Wildcat starters recorded double figure scoring led by senior Halley Busse with 23 points and eight assists (7-20 FG/3-9 3PT/6-7 FT) while senior Erin Norling added 17 points and nine rebounds (6-13 FG/2-4 3PT/3-4 FT). Sophomore Josey Ryan poured in 15 points (7-8 FG/0-1 3PT/1-1 FT) as junior Autumn Mlinar finished with 12 points (4-7 FG/1-2 3PT/3-4 FT).
Other Wildcat scoring came from senior Brittany Bongartz with eight points, junior Kylie Hammer had five points as sophomore Kassidy Pingel and junior Amelia Ivester both tallied two points.
WSC shot 29-67 (43.3%) from the field, 6-20 (30%) from behind the arc and 20-24 (83.3%) from the foul line.
Upper Iowa leaders were Brooke Evenson with 18 points and Lydia Haack with 11 points.
The Peacocks finished 27-72 (37.5%) from the floor, 12-32 (37.5%) from the three-point line and 13-15 (86.7%) at the charity stripe.
