Final Home Match Favors Winside In Five Sets

WINSIDE – After dropping a pair of home triangular matches this past Saturday, the Winside volleyball team closed out their home schedule.

From the Winside Public School gym, the Wildcats welcomed in Niobrara/Verdigre Tuesday night.

Both teams split the opening four sets with Niobrara-Verdigre winning the odd sets of 25-21, 25-11 and Winside winning the even sets of 25-18, 25-17. Winside then held on for the fifth set victory of 15-8.

The Wildcats snapped a four game losing streak and are now 4-14 while Niobrara-Verdigre fell to 3-11.

McKenna Russell recorded a double-double for Winside with 26 set assists and 14 digs to go along with nine kills while Hannah Gubbels paced the team in digs with 22 while adding two kills. Natalie Kruger tacked on eight kills, five set assists and six digs; Carsan Brogren had seven kills and 10 digs; Randee Haase finished with five kills; Micah Stenwall tallied four kills and 16 digs; Skye Schultz totaled three kills as Ashelyn Abler had 11 digs.

Hannah Gubbels had two service aces as Stenwall and Abler both had an ace while Haase finished with two solo blocks and it was Russell and Kruger both adding a solo block.

Winside will next compete in the Hartington-Newcastle Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, October 9.
