Extra-Inning Victory Allows Wayne State Softball To Split Friday Doubleheader

BEMIDJI, MN – With weather causing the Wayne State College softball final road weekend games to be moved up a day, the ‘Cats began competition Friday afternoon.

From the BSU Softball Field in Bemidji, Minnesota, WSC visited Bemidji State University.

In the opening game, the Beavers scored early and often with two runs in the first, three in the second and two more runs in the third. Neither team scored the rest of the game which saw Bemidji State win 7-0.

Taylor Menard singled twice while Kim Vidlak and Emily Chandler both doubled. Ashley Hernandez and Raquell Penke both singled.

Maddie Moser (3-12) suffered in five and a third allowing seven runs (six earned) off of nine hits while walking six batters and striking out one. Makenna Adkison worked two-thirds of an inning allowing one hit while walking two batters.

From the second contest, both teams were scoreless during the opening four innings. WSC then brought two runs across the plate in the fourth before BSU answered with two runs in the seventh. Both teams scored two runs in the eighth as the ‘Cats brought the go-ahead run in during the top of the ninth to win 5-4. With the split, Wayne State College is now 13-32 (4-24 NSIC) while Bemidji State sits 23-29 (6-22 NSIC).

Vidlak singled three times and drove in three runs while Kortney Buresh singled twice. Chandler singled and drove in a run while Kamryn Sparks, Morgan Vasa, Penke and Menard all singled.

Moser (4-12) picked up the win working an inning and a third of relief allowing one hit. Riley Vanderveen started seven and two-thirds allowing four runs (two earned) off 11 hits while walking two batters and striking out one.

Wayne State College will close out their softball season at Minnesota Crookston Saturday.
