Extra Base Hits, Solid Pitching Guide Wayne Seniors To Day One Invite Victory

BENNINGTON – Although no sanctioned American Legion Baseball Tournaments will be played this year, 16 teams received an invite during the COVID-19 Class B Tournament.

With Bennington and Hickman hosting games Thursday, July 30 – Saturday, August 1 and then Bennington for the finals on Sunday, August 2, the Wayne Post 43 Seniors opened competition Thursday late afternoon.

From Lynn R. Pruess Field in Bennington, Wayne took on Alliance. Post 43 held on for the 4-2 victory. Wayne improves to 20-1 on the season. The other North Division 2 game Thursday saw Blair defeat Omaha Concordia, 14-1.

Jacob Kneifl and Reid Korth both doubled and scored while Trevor DeBoer also doubled for Wayne. Hagan Miller singled and scored; Gunnar Jorgensen and Josh Lutt both singled as Tyrus Eischeid scored.

Kneifl picked up the win in six innings allowing seven hits while striking out nine batters and walking two. Trevor DeBoer earned the save in the final inning allowing one hit and struck out one batter.

The Wayne Seniors (1-0) will close out their divisional play on Friday competing against Concordia (0-1) at 1 p.m. and Blair (1-0) at 4 p.m. If Wayne wins their division, they’ll match up against the other North Division winner on Sunday with the South Division winners squaring off also Sunday.
