CRETE – After not being able to travel two weeks ago due to weather, the Wayne State College club wrestlers were in action this past weekend during the Doane Open.

Held on the campus of Doane in Crete, WSC wrestlers competed with individuals from Cowley College, Lindenwood – Belleville (Ill.), Grand View (Iowa), University of Colorado, Morningside College, Barton Community College, Iowa Western Community College, Nebraska-Kearney, Southwest Minnesota State, Northeast Oklahoma, Concordia University, Benedictine College, Northwest Kansas Technical College, Chadron State and the host, Doane University.

Hunter Weiss is currently ranked 18th in the nation per National College Wrestling Association. The 149-poudner posted a 2-2 record to lead WSC last Saturday.

Other Wildcat wrestlers included Tommy Nelson (133) going 2-2, Matthew Reeves (141), Levi Honeywell (149), Ethan Fitzler (157) going 1-2, Jordan Jensen (157), Gerald Kenkel (174) going 1-2, Melvyn Carreto (285), Angel Rojo (285) and Tyson Cisneros (285).

The Wayne State club wrestling team was also selected as a top 16 program and will be competing in Mesquite, Nevada in late January. The NCWA National Dual Tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, January 25-26.

WSC is off for the winter break and following their trip back from Nevada, the team will compete in the Sioux City Open on Saturday, February 2 while also competing in the Winona State Invite (2/16), Southwest Conference National Qualifier (3/2) in Dallas, Texas and those who qualify for the NCWA Nationals in Allen, Texas (3/14 – 3/16).
