District Final Volleyball Showdown Carried On KTCH Saturday

COLUMBUS – The Blue Devil volleyball team is looking to punch their ticket for the third straight year of state tourney competition while their opponent hasn’t been past the district final round in nearly 40 years.

As fans will be limited to just over 100 tickets per school, #5 Columbus Lakeview will host #12 Wayne High during the C1-5 District Volleyball Final on Saturday, October 31 at 1:30 p.m. You must have a ticket to enter Saturday’s match. Only 100 tickets were issued as the volleyball team is passing those out. Another 50 tickets have been requested.

Wayne High is 24-8 on the season and have gone 16-1, including a 40-4 record in sets played over the past 17 matches. For the Viqueens, they enter 27-5 and have won nine of their past 10 matches, going 22-4 in sets played.

WHS swept both Homer and Battle Creek while Columbus Lakeview swept Boone Central and topped Columbus Scotus in four sets winning their subdistrict tournaments.

The two programs competed against one another five times over a seven-year period in the Boone Central Tournament early in each season. Lakeview is 5-1 against Wayne with wins in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2016 while WHS won the 2013 meeting.

Earlier this week, Columbus Lakeview was rated #5 in the Lincoln Journal Star and #7 in the Omaha World Herald while Wayne was listed as a contender just outside the top 10.

Wayne High has gone 5-3 in district finals since 2002 as this is the first district final for Columbus Lakeview since 2016 when they fell to St. Paul. WHS has made back-to-back trips to state but have seen early exits to both Wahoo and Broken Bow in the first rounds while it’s been since 1981 for Columbus Lakeview. The Viqueens qualified three straight years from 1979 – 1981 placing runner-up in Class B in ’80 and ’81.
