Dirt Devil Softball Tuesday Night Recap

NORFOLK/WAYNE/PONCA/WEST POINT – All four Dirt Devil summer softball teams took to the diamond for weeknight competition.

The Dirt Devil 10s visited the Norfolk Golden Girls dropping both outings 11-5 and 9-7 to now sit 2-4 on the season, the 12s split a pair of home games against Highway 91 falling in game one 11-5 before winning 10-9 in game two to improve to 1-3, the Dirt Devil 14s traveled to Ponca winning the first game 15-3 before falling in the second, 8-7 to now sit 1-5 while the 16/18U team played at West Point winning 10-0 and 6-0 to improve to 6-4.

During the 10 & Under opening game, Norfolk brought in four runs in the first inning before outscoring Wayne 5-1 in the second and 2-1 in the third to lead 11-2. The Dirt Devil 10s scored three runs in the fourth but fell 11-5.

Anna Dutcher singled three times while Alexis Legler singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored for Wayne. Courtney Roeber singled twice and scored twice; Kinnley McGuire and Lilly Johnson both singled and scored as Gracelynn Daniels accounted for a RBI.

McGuire suffered the loss working an inning and a third allowing two earned runs off one hit while striking out three batters and walking one. As a pitching staff, Wayne gave up 11 earned runs off five hits in three and a third innings while striking out six batters and walking eight.

From the second game, the Golden Girls jumped ahead 5-2 after the first before Wayne answered with a five-run second to lead 7-5. Norfolk then posted a four-run third to win 9-7.

Lilly Johnson singled twice while McGuire singled and scored for Wayne. Anna Dutcher and Elizabeth Hix both scored twice as Sophia Petersen and Kaylei McIntosh also scored.

Johnson suffered the loss in an inning and two-thirds allowing seven earned runs off three hits while striking out three batters and walking six. McGuire worked a third of an inning allowing two earned runs off two hits while striking out one batter and walking another.

In the 12s first outing, Highway 91 jumped ahead 6-2 in the opening inning before tacking on three runs in the second. Wayne outscored HWY 91 3-2 in the third but fell 11-5.

During the nightcap, Wayne got the last at bat and scored in the home half of the inning to win 10-9.

 

From the 14s road competition, Wayne led 2-0 in the first before rattling off 13 runs in the second. Ponca did score three runs in the top of the third as the Dirt Devil 14s won 15-3.

Hannah Gubbels singled twice, drove in three runs and scored twice; Delaney Kruse singled twice and drove in two runs while Caitlyn Mostek singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice for Wayne. Samantha Gubbels singled, drove in a run and scored twice; Sammi Gubbels singled, drove in a run and scored; Jersi Jensen singled and scored; Kierah Haase scored three times and tallied two RBI; Emily Jaeger scored twice and added a RBI; Taytem Ellis scored and picked up a RBI as Rylin Hall accounted for a run scored.

Hall picked up the win in three innings allowing three runs (two earned) off five hits while striking out two batters and walking one.

14U:

In the second game, Ponca took control early with a 4-2 first and four more runs in the second to lead 8-2. The Dirt Devil 14s scored three runs in the third and two more in the fifth but fell 8-7.

Hannah Gubbels singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored three times while Ellis singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored once for Wayne. Jensen singled and drove in two runs; Haase doubled and scored twice as Kruse accounted for a run scored.

Sammi Gubbels suffered the loss in two innings allowing eight runs (five earned) off eight hits while striking out one batter and walking one. Hall worked two and two-thirds striking out two batters.

14U:

For the Dirt Devil 16/18s, Wayne scored single runs in the first and third innings before pouring in eight runs during the top of the fourth to win 10-0.

Brooklyn Kruse singled, doubled and drove in two runs while Taytum Sweetland singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice for Wayne. Kylen Robbins singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored twice; Rachel Hobbs doubled and scored; Mikaela McManigal tripled, drove in a run and scored; Nikki Fertig singled, drove in a run and scored; Logan Miller singled and scored; Jamie Janke scored and added a RBI; Hope O’Reilly and Kendall Dorey both singled and drove in a run as Hailey Schroeder scored.

Dorey picked up the no-hit, shutout win in three innings striking out eight batters and walking one. Hobbs worked the final inning striking out two batters and walking one.

16/18U:

Closing out the night, the Dirt Devil 16/18s scored all six of their runs in the third to win 6-0.

Rachel Hobbs singled, drove in two runs and scored while Logan Miller singled and drove in two runs. Brooklyn Kruse singled, drove in a run and scored; Taytum Sweetland and McManigal both singled and scored; Fertig singled as O’Reilly and Schroeder both scored.

Hobbs picked up the win in five innings allowing two hits while striking out nine batters and walking one.

16/18U:

The Dirt Devil 10s will next host the Norfolk Kelly’s at 6:30/8 p.m. on Thursday, July 2 from the Summer Sports Complex. The Dirt Devil 14s will compete in the Wahoo Triangular this Friday taking on Wahoo at 2 p.m. and Elkhorn at 4 p.m.;

The Dirt Devil 12s and the 16/18U team will both be off until Tuesday, July 7 hosting Ponca at 6:30/8 p.m. The 14s will also be in action that night at West Point at 6/8 p.m.
