WAYNE – Forecasted rain didn’t slow down a Dirt Devil softball team from opening their season Thursday evening.
From the Summer Sports Complex in Wayne, the Dirt Devil 16/18s team welcomed in Highway 91. The Dirt Devil 14U team was scheduled to host the Norfolk Golden Girls 1, but was canceled due to weather. The two teams will meet in Norfolk from Liberty Bell park on Thursday, June 25 at 6:30/8 p.m.
In the 16/18s double header, the Dirt Devils swept Highway 91 by scores of 9-3 and 8-2 to kick-off their season at 2-0.
The Dirt Devils started off strong in game one with a 7-1 lead after the first inning before adding another run in the second. Highway 91 outscored the Dirt Devils 2-1 in the fourth as the game ended 9-3 in four innings.

Rachel Hobbs recorded a pair of singles, two RBI along with a run scored while Taytum Sweetland added two singles and two runs scored. Brooklyn Kruse and Nikki Fertig both singled, drove in a run and scored as Kylen Robbins singled and drove in a run. Aliah Schulz tallied a single and scored twice. Other runs came from Michaela McManigal and Logan Miller.
Rachel Hobbs picked up the win in four innings allowing three runs (one earned) off four hits while striking out eight batters and walking two.
In the second contest, the Dirt Devil 16/18s scored four runs in the opening inning and added one run in the third to lead 5-0. After Highway 91 scored their lone two runs in the fourth, the Dirt Devils put the game away in the fifth with three more runs to win 8-2 and start the season at 2-0.

Jamie Janke and Fertig both singled and drove in a pair of runs while Hobbs singled and scored twice. McManigal crossed the plate three times, Brooklyn Kruse scored twice and Schulz added another run. Robbins and Logan Miller both added a RBI.
Hobbs tallied the second win in five innings allowing two runs off two hits while striking out 10 batters and waking three.
The Dirt Devil 16/18s will next host Kelly’s of Norfolk at 6:30/8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23.
