HASTINGS – The Dirt Devil 16/18s began their postseason state tournament run Friday late afternoon.
From Hastings, Wayne competed against the Columbus Bullets Friday and scored in extras to win 4-3. The Dirt Devil 16/18s are now 13-7 on the season.
Following a scoreless opening inning, the Dirt Devil 16/18s got on the board first with a run in the second. The Columbus Bullets then tied the game up in the third with a 2-1 inning. Columbus would take the lead in the sixth as Wayne forced extras with a single run in the seventh and then scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth to win 4-3.
Logan Miller singled and drove in two runs while Rachel Hobbs doubled and drove in a run for Wayne. Taytum Sweetland singled and scored twice; Kendall Dorey singled as Hope O’Reilly scored twice.
Dorey picked up the complete game victory in eight innings allowing three earned runs off four hits while striking out seven batters and walking three.

The Dirt Devil 16/18s will next face Lawrence at 3 p.m. in Hastings Saturday during the Class C 16/18U State Softball Tournament. Lawrence defeated Bow Spirit 18s White, 10-0. A win for Wayne would put them in an 8:15 p.m. winner’s bracket game tonight against the winner of either Fremont Force Cornett or McCook Force Softball while a loss would drop the Dirt Devil 16/18s to a 6:30 p.m. Saturday night game with an opponent to be determined.
