Dirt Devil 16/18s Begin State Tournament With Game One Victory, 14s Suffer Opening Round Loss

HASTINGS – A pair of Dirt Devil youth softball teams began their state tournament run Friday afternoon.

From the Nebraska USA Softball Complex in Hastings, the Dirt Devil 16/18s (16-13) opened with a 9-6 victory over Seward Illusion 18U while the Dirt Devil 14s (10-17) dropped a 12-2 decision to SWAT 14U.

During the Dirt Devil 16/18s victory, Logan Miller doubled twice and drove in three runs; Taytem Ellis doubled twice, drove in a run and scored while Kierah Haase doubled and scored twice.

Liberty Titiml singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice; Hailey Schroeder singled, drove in a run and scored; Sammi Gubbels singled and drove in a run; Caitlyn Mostek singled and scored as Delaney Kruse and Jersi Jensen both scored.

Gubbels (79) picked up the complete game victory in five innings allowing six runs (four earned) off six hits while striking out four batters and walking two.

The Dirt Devil 16/18s will be in action at 4:15 p.m. against Creighton Thunder with the winner advancing to Saturday’s 3 p.m. winner’s bracket game while the loser would fall to a 9:45 a.m. game on Saturday.

 

In the Dirt Devil 14s loss, Lily Gubbels singled, doubled and drove in a run while Jordyn Gamble singled and scored. Serenity Heil accounted for a RBI as Reagan McGuire scored.

Two pitchers combined for the loss being Gamble (83) in three innings allowing 12 runs (five earned) off five hits while striking out and walking four batters each as McGuire (5) worked the final inning.

The Dirt Devil 14s will next play at 6 p.m. Friday evening against the loser of Verdigre Stingers and NEN – Pender/Wisner.
