Dirt Devil 14s Fall To Golden Girls, 16/18s Split Home Outings With Kelly’s

WAYNE – While two Dirt Devil softball teams were on the road, the other two teams competed at home against a pair of Norfolk clubs.

From the Summer Sports Complex, the Dirt Devil 14s hosted the Norfolk Golden Girls 2 while the Dirt Devil 16/18s welcomed in Kelly’s Tuesday evening.

During the 14U doubleheader, the Norfolk Golden Girls 13U won 12-7 and then held off the Dirt Devils 8-7 in the second game. The Dirt Devils opened their season at 0-2.

The Golden Girls took the early 4-0 lead after the first and extended their lead thanks to a 7-2 second. The Dirt Devils scored five runs in the third but gave up one run in the top of the fourth to fall 12-7.

Delaney Kruse singled twice, drove in two runs and scored while Rylin Hall singled, drove in a run and scored. Jersi Jensen singled twice and scored twice; Hannah Gubbels and Taytem Ellis both singled and scored, Kierah Haase scored and Emily Jaeger drove in a run.

Sammi Gubbels suffered the loss in four innings allowing 12 earned runs off 10 hits while striking out three batters and walking five.

During the second game, the Golden Girls scored two runs in the first, one in the second and two more in the third to lead 5-0. The Dirt Devil 14s then took the lead thanks to a seven-run fourth but the Kelly’s added a run in the home half of the fourth before regaining the lead with two runs in the fifth to win 8-7.

Haase doubled twice and drove in a run, Samantha Gubbels singled, drove in a run and scored while Taytem Ellis doubled, drove in a run and scored. Sammi Gubbels singled twice and scored; Delaney Kruse doubled and scored; Caitlyn Mostek singled, drove in two runs and scored; Emily Jaeger singled and scored while Hall accounted for a run scored.

Hall suffered the loss in five innings allowing eight runs (five earned) off 10 hits while striking out four batters and walking seven.

In the 16/18s matchup with Kelly’s, Kelly’s won the opening game 5-2 while the Dirt Devils answered with a 9-6 victory. The Dirt Devil 16/18s are now 3-1 on the season.

The Dirt Devils took the early 2-0 lead after the first inning before the Norfolk Kelly’s answered with a three-run second inning. Kelly’s added two more runs in the fourth to win 5-2.

Aliah Schulz singled twice and scored while Rachel Hobbs singled and drove in a run. Brooklyn Kruse also scored.

Hobbs suffered the loss in four innings allowing five runs (one earned) off seven hits while striking out five batters and walking three.

Wayne jumped ahead in game two with an 8-2 first inning as Kelly’s scored two runs in each of the second and third. The Dirt Devil 16/18s also scored a run in the top of the third to win 9-6.

Jamie Janke singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Dirt Devils. Logan Miller added a single, two RBI and run scored while Kruse and Schulz both singled and scored. Taytum Sweetland and Mikaela McManigal both scored as Rachel Hobbs and Nikki Fertig drove in a run and accounted for a run scored. Hailey Schroeder also drove in a run.

Hobbs secured the win in four innings allowing six runs (four earned) off six hits while striking out six batters and walking four.

The Dirt Devil 14s will next visit the Norfolk Golden Girls 1 on Thursday, June 25 at 6:30/8 p.m. from Liberty Bell Park while the 16/18s will play at Pender on June 25 at 6/7:30 p.m.
