CLEBURNE, TX – The pre-conference road schedule began Friday afternoon for the Wayne State College baseball team as they took part in a Texas trip.
After a 12-hour bus ride Thursday and an evening practice, the ‘Cats went to work for a day game against Newman University Friday.
The Wildcats began scoring with single runs crossing the plate in the first and second innings. Newman then used a five-run fourth inning to go up 5-2 before the ‘Cats scored two more runs pulling back within a run. After two scoreless innings, WSC scored two more runs in the seventh to go up 6-5 until Newman tied the game with a run in the top of the ninth. Bryce Bisenius then recorded a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to win the season-opener for the ‘Cats 8-6. Newman fell to 0-1.
Andrew Hanson paced WSC with two doubles, a single, two runs and a RBI while Jake Lemar recorded a single, double and scored twice. Brendan Madsen (single), Alex Logelin (double), Bisenius (two-run HR) all added a hit and scored. Chris Cornish singled and drove in a run, Colin Chick singled and Peyton Barnes doubled and drove in two runs as CJ Neumann scored.
Aidan Breedlove started the game and allowed five runs in three and two-thirds off two hits while walking three batters and striking out another six. Ryan Obrecht allowed one hit in a third of an inning, Logan Walters pitched two innings allowing a hit while striking out a batter; Ryan Petersen worked an inning allowing one hit and walking a batter and Lawson Zenner came in for an inning allowing two hits and striking out three batters. Andrew Staebell then secured the win after an inning of work allowing an earned run off two hits while striking out two batters.

The Wayne State College baseball team will next face Southern Arkansas at 4:30 p.m. followed by Oklahoma Panhandle State at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 1. The team will also have a game Sunday with an opponent TBD pending on how they finish in pool play this weekend.
