Despite Early Set Wins For ‘Cats, #7 Southwest Minnesota State Takes Five-Set Match

WAYNE – Saturday afternoon featured a top 25 showdown between #19 Wayne State College and #7 Southwest Minnesota State.

From Rice Auditorium, WSC won the first and third sets 25-23 and 25-13 as SMSU won the second set, 25-18. The Mustangs then won back-to-back sets in the fourth and fifth (25-22, 15-11) to win the match in five-sets. Southwest Minnesota State improves to 7-3 (2-0 NSIC) as the ‘Cats fall to 8-2 (1-1 NSIC).

Katie Stephens paced WSC at the net with 16 kills, followed by Tarrin Beller with 12 kills, Alyssa Ballenger posted a double-double with 11 kills and 19 digs as Jaci Brahmer tallied another 11 kills. Megan Gebhardt tacked on 51 set assists as Haley Kauth came away with 36 digs.

Wayne State College out-hit SMSU, .199 to .187 the ‘Cats also won the block category (11-8).

#19 Wayne State College is next scheduled to visit Augustana on Tuesday, September 11 at 6 p.m.
