Day One Results From Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout, Day Two Postponed Until Wednesday

WAYNE – Day one is in the books for the 2020 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout Wayne High Holiday Basketball Tournament from Monday.

From Wayne High School, girls division games favored: Pierce over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, 40-33; Pender defeated Hartington Cedar Catholic, 53-29; Auburn (5-0) defeated Winnebago (3-5), 60-58 as Wayne defeated Homer, 61-37

At Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, boys division games saw Pierce defeat LCC in overtime, 55-47; HCC defeated Pender, 69-43; Auburn (5-0) defeated Winnebago (3-4), 49-36 and Wayne defeated Homer, 69-36.

During the LCC girls game, Pierce used an 18-3 first quarter while the Bears edged the Bluejays in the second quarter, 9-6. Pierce remained ahead 24-12 at the break. Pierce then outscored LCC, 8-6 in the third as the Bears cut the game within six points late by winning the fourth, 15-8. Final, again favored Pierce (5-2) over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (3-5), 40-33.

Junior Kinsey Hall paced LCC in scoring with 14 points followed by fellow junior Reggan Kuhlman with eight points. Freshman Mallory Ericksen poured in six points as senior Erica Wolfgram went 5-10 from the foul line for all five of her points.

Pierce used a pair of double figure scorers from senior Kenzie Moeller with 12 points while senior Abby Meier fouled out with 10 points. Sophomore Morgan Moeller finished with eight points, senior Faith Lubischer added five points, junior Payten Simmons tallied four points and junior Gina Wragge had one point.

From the Pender girls game, the Pendragons jumped ahead 21-9 after the first before HCC won a low scoring second, 6-2. Pender led 23-15 at the break and outscored the Trojans 18-4 in the third and 12-10 in the fourth. Final again favored Pender 53-29 improving to 7-2 while Cedar Catholic fell to 1-5.

Scoring leaders favored senior Ashley Ostrand for Pender with 26 points while senior Brynn Wortmann of HCC scored 10 points.

During the Wayne High girls game, Wayne High used a 16-10 first quarter followed by a 12-9 second to lead 28-19 at the break. WHS also outscored Homer, 19-8 in the third and 14-10 in the fourth to win 61-37. The Blue Devils snapped a two-game losing streak to now sit 4-5 on the season while Homer fell to 2-5.

Sophomore Brooklyn Kruse went off for Wayne High with 19 points followed by junior Rubie Klausen with 17 points. Freshman Katy Jones added six points, junior Mady Sievers had five points, senior Emily Longe tallied four points, junior Kiara Krusemark poured in three points, junior Mikaela McManigal, freshman Kierah Haase and freshman Frantzdie Barner all scored two points as sophomore Madi Urbanec tacked on a point.

Homer leaders were junior Hannah Elsea with 15 points and sophomore Bradie Johnson with 11 pints.

During the Wayne High boys game, WHS took a 15-8 first quarter lead and added to their lead thanks to a 19-12 second quarter. The Blue Devils led 34-20 at the break. Wayne High then outscored Homer 22-12 in the third quarter and 12-4 in the fourth to win 68-36. WHS improved to 8-1 (winning their fifth straight) while Homer fell to 0-7 (dropping their 12th straight).

Sophomore Daniel Judd paced a trio of Blue Devils with double figure scoring pouring in 18 points while juniors Tanner Walling and Brandon Bartos both finished with 10 points. Senior Nolan Hunke and sophomore Sedjro Agoumba each had eight points, sophomore Andrew Jones added seven points, senior Jacob Kneifl tallied three points as senior Colton Vovos and junior Camron Weaselhead both had two points.

Homer was led in scoring by senior Kadyn Harris with 11 points.

Day two of the 2020 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout has been moved to Wednesday, December 30 with the final day now set for Thursday, December 31.

Boys Division from Wayne High: LCC vs. Pender at 11 a.m. followed by Winnebago vs. Homer at 1 p.m.; Pierce vs. HCC at 3:00 p.m. and Auburn vs. Wayne at 5 p.m. Both winner’s bracket games will be carried on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and, pregame show set for around 2:45 p.m.
