Crete Uses Walk-Off Hit In Bottom Of Seventh To Advance To District Finals, Wayne In Search Of Wildcard

WAYNE – For the second time Monday afternoon, Wayne High softball took part in a postseason game.

Back at the Wayne Softball Complex, #1 Wayne took on #3 Crete after WHS defeated #4 Schuyler, 17-0 as the Cardinals held off #2 Seward, 7-6 (Crete defeated Seward for the third time in four meetings this year).

Crete used a walk-off single to defeat Wayne in the home half of the seventh inning for a final of 6-5. The Cardinals improved to 16-14 while Wayne High fell to 18-7.

Wayne High started strong with a three-run opening inning as Crete added a run in the home half of the inning. Following a scoreless second, both teams scored two runs in the third before neither team could score in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Wayne High led 5-3 in the seventh and left the bases loaded while the Cardinals drove in three runs to win in walk-off fashion, 6-5.

Brooklyn Kruse singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored twice while Hope O’Reilly singled twice and drove in two runs for Wayne. Virginia Kniesche singled twice and scored; Kendall Dorey and Taytum Sweetland both singled and drove in a run as Brianna Nissen scored twice.

Dorey (146 pitches) suffered the loss in six and a third innings allowing six runs (five earned) off 11 hits while striking out nine batters and walking eight.

Crete will advance as one of the 10 subdistrict champions as Wayne High is hoping to earn a wildcard as WHS entered Monday #10 in Class B.

B-2 (Skutt Catholic): #1 Omaha Skutt Catholic defeated #4 Platteview, 15-0; #2 Blair defeated #3 Ralston, 9-1 and Skutt Catholic was crowned champions over Blair, 12-0.

B-3 (Bennington): #1 Bennington defeated #4 Cass, 10-0; #2 Elkhorn defeated #3 Elkhorn North, 9-1 and Bennington was crowned champions over Elkhorn, 9-8.

B-4 (Ashland): #1 Ashland-Greenwood defeated #4 South Sioux City, 12-2; #2 Waverly defeated #3 DC West/Concordia, 8-2 and Waverly was crowned champions over Ashland-Greenwood, 11-2.

B-5 (Wahoo): #1 Wahoo defeated #4 NEN, 6-1; #2 Beatrice defeated #3 Norris, 6-2 and Wahoo was crowned champions over Beatrice, 7-4.

B-6 (Wayne): #1 Wayne defeated #4 Schuyler, 17-0; #3 Crete defeated #2 Seward, 7-6 and Seward was crowned champions over Wayne, 6-5.

B-7 (Aurora): #1 Aurora defeated #4 Blue River, 10-2; #3 York defeated #2 Columbus Lakeview, 14-10 and Aurora was crowned champions over York, 7-6.

B-8 (Hastings): #1 Hastings defeated #4 Grand Island Central Catholic, 13-1; #2 Grand Island Northwest defeated #3 Adams Central, 6-1 and Hastings was crowned champions over Northwest, 12-1.

B-9 (O’Neill): #1 O’Neill defeated #4 Lexington, 5-1; #3 McCook defeated #2 Holdrege, 13-2 and O’Neill was crowned champions over McCook, 5-3.

B-10 (Scottsbluff): #1 Scottsbluff defeated #4 Alliance, 12-2; #2 Gering defeated #3 Chadron, 12-0 and Gering was crowned champions over Scottsbluff, 13-4.
