Nicole Brungardt To Be Featured Among Cornhusker State Games Opening Ceremonies

LINCOLN – Earlier this week officials with the Nebraska Sports Council announced that a former Wayne State standout and U.S. Women’s Bobsled athlete Nicole Brungardt will lead the Oath of Athletes this summer.

The Cornhusker State Games (CSG) will hold their opening ceremonies on Friday, July 19 at Lincoln’s Seascrest Field.

According to a release from the Cornhusker State Games Monday, Brungardt recently wrapped up her second season, which saw her rise to a top-10 position in the world with a 9th-place finish in the two-man women’s division at the World Bobsled Championships in Whistler, British Columbia.

Officials also issued a reminder to register for the 2019 Cornhusker State Games before March 28 to take advantage of the lowest possible entry fees. All registered participants receive a shirt and pass to the Opening Ceremonies and the pre-show SportFest meal with their paid entry fee.

The Cornhusker State Games offer competition in 70 sports for athletes of all ages and abilities. Most events take place July 19-28 at venues in Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding communities. Officials expect around 11,000 participants and those interested can find information or register at cornhuskerstategames.com.

Brungardt was a standout athlete at Norfolk Catholic High School where she earned the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star Female Athlete of the Year Award in 2008. She later starred in both volleyball and track at Wayne State College.
