Cooksey Tabbed With Top Performance Honors Under Final NSIC Weekly Softball Recognitions

WAYNE – A member of the Wayne State College softball team was listed as a top performer during the final 2020 Northern Sun Conference Softball weekly honors Monday.

Freshman pitcher Sloan Cooksey of WSC was noted under other top performers. The Mira Costa HS grad from Los Angeles, California made five appearances, all in relief, recording four saves with a 0.00 ERA in 13 innings pitched.

She allowed just five hits and two runs (both unearned) with 13 strikeouts and eight walks holding opponents to a .116 average. Cooksey pitched three innings of one hit relief for a save in a 7-1 win over Ferris State; worked three innings of two hit relief with four strikeouts and save in a 2-0 win over Slippery Rock (Pa). She also worked three innings of one hit relief with four strikeouts and save in a 5-1 win over Urbana.

The Wayne State College softball team won five of their final six games going 5-3 during the National Training Center (NTC) spring games in Florida. The ‘Cats ended their season at 10-13 overall, shortened due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

NSIC Softball awards were senior outfielder Carly Esselman of Minnesota State-Mankato and sophomore pitcher Sydney LaPoint of St. Cloud State.
