Close Home Losses See Wildcat Softball Losing Steak Fall To 18

WAYNE – Due to field conditions and expected cool temperatures from Saturday, the Wayne State College softball home doubleheaders were pushed back a day.

The Pete Chapman Softball Complex was the host site for a pair of Sunday doubleheaders. WSC entertained Minot State while the Augustana/University of Mary games were moved to Wayne due to snowfall in the Sioux Falls area.

From the opening game, Minot State outscored WSC 3-2 in the second as both teams scored two runs in the third. The ‘Cats cut into the deficit with a two-run fourth before the Beavers pulled away with a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to win 8-6.

Kamryn Sparks recorded a two-run homer and single as Emily Chandler added a two-run homerun. Taylor Menard and Kim Vidlak both doubled while Abbie Hix singled twice as Kortney Buresh and Morgan Vasa both tacked on a single and RBI.

Makenna Adkison (6-10) suffered the loss in seven innings allowing eight runs (five earned) off nine hits while striking out four batters and walking three.

In the second game, WSC jumped out front with a run in the first before both teams scored a run in the third. A three-run fifth inning put the ‘Cats out front 5-1 before Minot State added a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh to win 6-5. Minot State improved to 21-12 (10-6 NSIC) while Wayne State is now 9-24 (0-16 NSIC), dropping their 18th consecutive game.

Menard recorded three singles and two RBI as Chandler singled twice and drove in two runs for WSC. Buresh singled twice while Sparks and Vidlak both singled.

Riley Vanderveen (0-5) suffered the loss in two-thirds of an inning allowing the go ahead run off two hits. Maddie Moser worked six and a third innings allowing five runs (four earned) off seven hits while striking out two batters and walking three.

The Wayne State College softball team is back on the home diamond Monday afternoon hosting University of Mary. Games times are now noon and 2 p.m. The Augie/Minot State games were moved back to Bowden Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota also at 2/4 p.m. that were going to be played in Wayne.
