Chalk Up Another Home Wayne State Men’s Victory, NSIC Conference Opener Tuesday With Augustana

WAYNE – Following a home non-conference victory over Bellevue earlier this week, the Wayne State College men’s basketball team welcomed in another non-conference opponent.

From Rice Auditorium, WSC entertained Simpson Friday night.

Wayne State College never gave up the lead and took control in the first half, 57-32. Simpson then edged the ‘Cats in the second half, 40-38 as WSC won 95-72. The Wildcats improved to 2-2 as Simpson fell to 1-3.

Five Wildcats poured in double-figure scoring led by Justin Eagins with 19 points, two blocks and five boards (7-9 FG/3-5 3PT/2-2 FT)); Jay Saunders added 14 points (7-11 FG/0-3 3PT); Sean Stokes finished with 13 points (4-6 FG/3-4 3PT/2-2 FT) as Alec Millender (team-high four assists and three steals) (3-5 FG/0-1 3PT/4-4 FT) and Jordan Janssen both tallied 10 points (5-8 FG).

Other scoring came from Nate Mohr with eight points, Cody McCullough had seven points; Ben Dentlinger (two blocks) and Zach LaFave (team-high six boards/two blocks) recorded six points each as Karter Lein had two points.

The Wildcats shot 39-70 (55.7%) from the floor, 8-21 (38.1%) from behind the arc and 9-10 (90%) at the charity stripe.

Wayne State College outrebounded Simpson, 34-26 (8-5 offensive). WSC scored 27 points off 16 Simpson turnovers.

A pair of Simpson College players finished with double-figure scoring by Andrew Curran with 18 points and Jack Hutchinson with 10 points.

Simpson finished 25-56 (44.6%) from the field, 11-25 (44%) from the three-point line and 11-15 (73.3%) from the foul line.

Both the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams will next open NSIC play on Tuesday, November 23 with Augustana University coming to town. The women’s game will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s contest at 7:30 p.m. Pregame show coverage on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com on the Wildcat Sports Network will be at 5 p.m.
