Busy Weekend Of Non-Conference Wildcat Basketball Action, Home Stretch Starts Next Week

SHAWNEE, OK/WICHITA, KS – Both the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams will begin their 2021-22 season with a non-conference road weekend.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate (NSIC)/Great American Conference (GAC) Challenge will take place this weekend for the Wildcat men in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

This will be the season-opening weekend for the Wildcat men starting with the host Oklahoma Baptist at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 12 before facing Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m.

MSU Moorhead will be the other NSIC team in action against the GAC programs on opposite days along with WSC.

Wayne State College closed out their COVID-shortened 2021 schedule at 11-7 (10-4 NSIC) and captured the NSIC South Division the second time in three seasons. The Wildcats also qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the first time in 21 years.

Oklahoma Baptist has won both their exhibition contests over University of Science and Arts (OK), 107-75 on October 22 and recently against Arlington Baptist University (TX), 98-49 on November 2. The Bison finished 16-6 (14-3 GAC) last season falling in the NCAA South Central Region Semifinals.

Southeastern Oklahoma State (Durant, OK) suffered an exhibition loss at UT-Arlington (TX), 68-64 on November 1. The Savage Storm is coming off a season where they finished 8-11 overall and 7-10 GAC while going 1-1 in the GAC Tournament.

The Wayne State College men will then host six straight opponents starting next week from Rice Auditorium.

They include non-conference games against Bellevue on Tuesday, November 16 at 7 p.m.; Simpson on Friday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m.; Doane on Saturday, November 27 at 3:30 p.m. and Nebraska-Kearney on Monday, November 29 at 7 p.m. (game carried on KTCH). NSIC games will be Augustana on Tuesday, November 23 at 7:30 p.m. (women first at 5:30) and Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday, December 2 at 5:30 p.m. (women second at 7:30 p.m.).


All NSIC games will be carried on either KTCH or KCTY and waynedailynews.com.


Following an exhibition loss at Creighton last Wednesday, the Wildcat women’s basketball team will open their four-game non-conference schedule on Saturday, November 13 at 2 p.m. WSC will visit Newman University in Wichita, Kansas.

Newman is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The Jets finished 4-18 overall last year and in MIAA play. WSC went 6-10 last year (5-9 NSIC).

The Wayne State College women will then open a five-game home schedule in mid-November through December 2. They include three non-conference opponents of Chadron State on Thursday, November 18 at 6:30 p.m., Black Hills State on Friday, November 19 at 5:30 p.m. and South Dakota Mines on Wednesday, November 24 at 3:30 p.m. as well as two NSIC contests being Augustana on Tuesday, November 23 at 5:30 p.m. (men to follow at 7:30 p.m.) and Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. (men first at 5:30 p.m.).
