WAYNE – With four home games reaming on the regular season schedule, the Wayne State College women’s basketball team went to work Friday evening.
From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, WSC welcomed in Southwest Minnesota State.
Wayne State outscored the Mustang women by 13 in the third quarter and went onto win 74-60. WSC improves to 6-7 (5-6 NSIC) while SMSU fell to 7-4 (5-4 NSIC).
Southwest Minnesota State took the early 14-12 lead after one quarter of play before WSC answered with a 17-14 second. The ‘Cats held a 29-28 lead at the break. Wayne State then took control of the game thanks to a 32-19 third while both teams scored 13 points in the fourth. Final again favored WSC, 74-60.
The Wildcat women were led by a trio of players in double figure scoring. Senior Halley Busse finished with 26 points (9-17/5-10 3PT/5-7 FT), six assists, five rebounds and two steals while senior Erin Norling went off for 25 points (9-14 FG/1-3 3PT/6-8 FT), nine rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Kassidy Pingel poured in 12 points (4-7 FG/1-2 3PT/3-4 FT) off the bench to go along with six boards.
Other scoring came from junior Kylie Hammer with five points, five assists and a team-lead three steals as sophomores Awoti Akoi and Lauren Zacharias (two steals) both had two points. Norling, Akoi and Hammer all had a block.
WSC shot 24-56 (42.9%) from the field, 7-24 (29.2%) from the three-point line and 19-25 (76%) at the foul line.
SMSU leaders were Jenna Borchers with 14 points while Maleah Reinhart added 13 points.
The Mustangs finished 20-56 (35.7%) from the floor, 6-24 (37.5%) from behind the arc and 11-15 (73.3%) from the charity stripe.
