WAYNE – With two home games on the schedule this week for the Wayne High baseball team, the Blue Devils first welcomed in Douglas County West on Tuesday.
From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, WHS hosted the Falcons during their home opener in Wayne.
Wayne High jumped ahead early and held on for the 6-4 win against Douglas County West. The Blue Devils are now 3-2 on the season while the Falcons fell to 1-4.
In the lone Class B varsity outing, Wayne drove in single runs during the first and second innings to lead 2-0. After a scoreless third, The Blue Devils posted a four-run fourth inning. Following two more scoreless innings, the Falcons began to chip away at the deficit with their own four-run seventh inning. Wayne High outlasted DC West, 6-4 and outhit the Falcons, 10-4 while DC West committed two errors compared to one from WHS.
Gavin Redden singled three times, drove in a run and scored twice while James Dorcey singled three times and drove in two runs for Wayne. Brooks Kneifl doubled, drove in two runs and scored once; Devin Anderson singled twice and scored; Kaleb Moormeier singled and drove in a run as Calvin Starzl and Cooper Zara both scored.
Kneifl (86 pitches) picked up the victory in six innings allowing one hit while striking out 14 batters and walking two. Redden (29 pitches) closed out the final inning allowing four runs off three hits while walking one batter.
Wayne High’s scheduled home baseball game against Crete for Thursday has now been moved to Friday, April 1. Varsity action will start at 4:30 p.m. followed by JV competition around 6:30 p.m. from Hank Overin Field.
