BRLD Boys Advances To District Final, Ponca Awaits Wildcard

PENDER – After hosting an undefeated team in early January, the Ponca boys basketball team took on that same opponent who was still undefeated entering subdistrict tourney play.

From Pender Public Schools, #2 Ponca competed against #1 Bancroft Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur Thursday evening in the Class C2-4 subdistrict.

BRLD used a pair of 19-point quarters to pull away from Ponca as the Wolverines won their 48th straight game with a final of 59-43. BRLD improves to 25-0 while the Indians fell to 22-4.

Bancroft Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur opened the game with a 19-11 first quarter before edging Ponca in the second 11-9. At the break, BRLD led 30-20. The Wolverines then used another 19-11 quarter in the third before Ponca won the fourth, 12-10.

Brandon Kneifl was Ponca’s leader with 16 points (four made three’s) while Carter Kingsbury followed with 15 points (three made three’s, 4-5 FT). Other scoring came from Cayden Phillips with eight points and Paul Masin tallied four points.

As a team, Ponca shot 9-11 from the foul line.

Four Wolverines posted double figure scoring led by Lucas Vogt with 20 points as Jaxon Johnson followed with 14 points. Both Darwin Snyder and Dylan Beutler tallied 10 points.

Other BRLD scoring came from Will Gatzemeyer with three points and Brayden Anderson tacked on two points.

BRLD finished 10-14 from the charity stripe.

BRLD earns the automatic berth to the district final while Ponca will await for a wildcard.

NSAA officials will release the district brackets once all subdistricts have gone final as well as game time and locations decided among teams. Class C1-D2 district boys games can either be played on Saturday, February 29; Monday, March 2 or Tuesday, March 3.
