Blue Devils To Host Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout From High School and WSC

WAYNE – Eight girls and eight boys basketball teams will play three games over a three-day period during the 2020 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout now at two different locations.

To help spread out teams, household family members grand parents and event personnel, this year’s 24-game tourney will be played at both Wayne High School and Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.

The tournament will last from Monday, December 28 – Wednesday, December 30.

The Girls Division will open from Wayne High on Monday with Pierce (4-2) vs. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (3-4) at 11 a.m. followed by Hartington Cedar Catholic (1-4) vs. Pender (6-2) at 1 p.m. Auburn (4-0) will then face Winnebago (3-4) at 3 p.m. while Wayne High (3-5) will close out the evening against Homer (2-4) at 5 p.m.

Day two girls division games will be played at WSC beginning with loser’s bracket games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. followed by winner’s bracket games at 3/5 p.m.

Boys Division games will begin at Wayne State College on Monday with the same match-ups of LCC (6-1) vs. Pierce (5-1) at 11 a.m., HCC (2-1) vs. Pender (0-5) at 1 p.m., Auburn (3-0) vs. Winnebago (3-3) at 3 p.m. and Wayne (7-1) vs. Homer (0-6) at 5 p.m.

Auburn is the two-time defending Class C1 boys state champions and have won 40 consecutive games. Their last loss was to the two-time defending Class C2 state champions of BRLD on February 9, 2019 (68-52) during the Grand Island Heartland Classic. BRLD recently saw their 55-game winning streak come to an end after falling at Howells-Dodge on December 18 (59-56/OT). The previous loss for BRLD was also at Howells-Dodge on December 14, 2018 (61-51).

Day two boys division games will be played at Wayne High School beginning with loser’s bracket games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. followed by winner’s bracket games at 3/5 p.m.

Both the girls fifth/seventh place as well as boys fifth/seventh place games will take part at Wayne High on Wednesday with game times at 11 a.m. (G7th); 1 p.m. (B7th); 3 p.m. (G5th) and 5 p.m. (B5th).

All championship and consolation games will take part at WSC beginning with the girls third place game at 11 a.m.; boys third place game at 1 p.m.; girls championship game at 3 p.m. and boys championship game at 5 p.m.

Due to games being played at the same time at two different locations, we’ll only be able to cover both the Wayne girls and boys on day one.

Girls Division (Wayne High): Pierce vs. LCC on The City ‘KCTY’ 98.9/1590 at 11 a.m. followed by HCC vs. Pender on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 at 1 p.m…then Wayne vs. Homer on The City ‘KCTY’ 98.9/1590 at 5 p.m.

Boys Division (Wayne State): Wayne High vs. Homer at 5 p.m. on Big Red County ‘KTCH’ 104.9.

 

Day Two:

Girls Division (Wayne State): Wayne High vs. Auburn/Winnebago on The City ‘KCTY’ 98.9/1590 either at 1 p.m. or 5 p.m.

Boys Division (Wayne High): Pierce/LCC winner vs. HCC/Pender winner on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 at 3 p.m. and Wayne vs. Auburn/Winnebago on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 either at 1 p.m. or 5 p.m.

 

Day Three: Only if a local team is playing for third place/championship games…TBD

 

Last year’s girls division champion favored Hastings-St. Cecilia (C2 two-time defending state champion) over West Point-Beemer, 45-28. Pender topped Arlington (52-39) in the consolation round.

Last year’s  boys division champion saw Auburn (C1 two-time defending state champion) defeat Hartington Cedar Catholic, 62-57. Wayne High defeated Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (2020 D1 state champion), 59-50 to finish third.
