Blue Devils Secure Road Conference Sweep, Busy Home Schedule Upcoming

ALBION – Both the Wayne High girls and boys competed on the road Saturday against a Mid State Conference opponent after each playing separate road conference games earlier in the week.

From Boone Central Schools in Alboin, WHS visited the Boone Central Cardinals.

The Wayne girls defeated Boone Central, 51-38 while the Blue Devil boys won 58-43 over the Cardinals.

The WHS girls improved to 6-7 as the Cardinals fell to 5-8 while the Wayne boys are now 11-1 as Boone Central fell to 7-6.

During the girls game, Wayne High jumped ahead thanks to a 16-2 first quarter before Boone Central answered with a 17-7 second quarter. WHS remained ahead at the break, 23-19. The Cardinals made it a one-point game following a 15-12 third as Wayne High closed out the game by outscoring Boone Central, 16-4 in the final eight minutes. WHS held on for the 51-38 victory.

Three of the five starters posted double figure scoring for Wayne High led by the 18-point performance from Brooklyn Kruse. Mia Nelsen added 12 points, Rubie Klausen finished with 10 points, Frantzdie Barner poured in six points as Kiara Krusemark tallied three points.

Cardinal leaders were Macy Rankin with 13 points as Ashtyn Hedlund added 12 points.

 

In the boys contest, Boone Central held the early 13-10 lead after the first quarter while Wayne High took the second, 16-12 to lead by one at the break of 26-25. The Blue Devils then outscored Boone Central 12-4 in the third and 20-14 in the fourth. Final favored Wayne High, 58-43.

A trio of double figure scorers paced Wayne High being Brandon Bartos with 13 points, Sedjro Agoumba added 11 points and Tanner Walling finished with 10 points. Other scoring came from Alex Phelps with nine points, Colson Nelsen and Daniel Judd both contributed six points as Carter Junck scored three points.

Cardinal leaders were Alex Christo with 12 points and Dustin Andreasen with nine points.

The Wayne High girls and boys will next host Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Tuesday, January 11 at 6:15 and 8 p.m. JV games will begin at 4:30 p.m. Pregame show on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com will be at 5:55 p.m. with Sports Director, Aaron Scheffler.

The Blue Devil girls will also be hosting North Bend Central on Thursday and welcome in Norfolk Catholic on Friday this week. The Friday girls only game will be carried on KTCH. For the Wayne boys, WHS will also host North Bend Thursday before entertaining Boys Town on Saturday.

Boone Central is back in action on Saturday, January 15 at Guardian Angels Central Catholic.
