Blue Devils Record Nine-Run Sixth Inning To Secure Road Victory

PONCA – With a of couple regular season games and a pair of weekend tournaments remaining, the Wayne High softball team took part in a northeast Nebraska showdown Tuesday evening.

Class B WHS visited Class C Ponca and pulled away in the final inning to win 13-1. The Blue Devils won their fifth straight and are 13-4 on the season while the Indians fell to 12-11.

Wayne High led early thanks to a 2-1 first before adding a run in the second. WHS scored one run in the fourth in-between scoreless third and fifth innings before posting a nine-run sixth to win 13-1. WHS had 11 hits, with four going extra bases.

Hope O’Reilly recorded two doubles, a single and four RBI while Aliah Schulz added two doubles, a RBI and two runs scored. Kendall Dorey drove in three runs off two singles; Logan Miller had two singles, two RBI and three runs scored; Virginia Kniesche singled twice, drove in a run and scored; Taytum Sweetland accounted for a RBI; Brianna Nissen scored twice as single runs came from Mikaela McManigal, Liberty Titiml, Taytem Ellis, Kierah Haase and Jersi Jensen.

Kendall Dorey (105 pitches) secured the victory in five innings allowing one run while striking out 13 batters and walking seven. Sammi Gubbels (20) came in for an inning striking out and walking one batter each. Both Dorey and Gubbels combined for the no-hitter.

Wayne High will next visit Class B NEN (Wisner-Pilger/Pender/BRLD) on Thursday, September 23. The game will be played at the Dave Nitzschke Complex in Pender.
