Blue Devils Punch Ticket To State, Extend Undefeated Season Into Postseason

WAYNE – After outscoring two opponents 22-0 in a pair of run-rule matches Thursday and Friday, #1 Wayne High closed out the C-5 District Softball Tournament with a bang.

For the second time in tourney play, WHS took on Boone Central/Newman Grove from the Wayne Softball Complex.

WHS started off hot with a four-run first inning. The Blue Devils then added seven runs in the second and eight more in the third to win 19-0. Wayne High is now 31-0 while Boone Central/Newman Grove ends their season at 22-13.

Maysn Dorey posted four hits, Kayla Fleming added two singles, a double and a RBI as Allison Claussen tacked on homerun, double and two RBI for Wayne. Annie Kniesche recorded a homerun to go along with three RBI, Tori Kniesche singled twice and drove in two runs as well as Sidney Biggerstaff tallied a single, homerun and three RBI. Abby Ankeny singled twice and drove in a run, Josie Thompson singled, doubled and drove in two runs as both Kendall Dorey and Amara Hurlbert accounted for a RBI.

Tori Kniesche picked up the complete game shutout win in three innings striking out eight of nine batters faced in 38 pitches.

The top ranked Class C softball team, Wayne High Blue Devils have now qualified for their 16th state tournament in program history marking their 12th straight. The last two years, WHS took part in the Class B bracket going 1-2 in 2017 and dropped both games in 2016. In 2015, Wayne High tallied a 2-2 record in Class C.

Wayne High has won two state titles in Class C (2003/2004) while posting three runner-up finishes (2007/2009/2013).

 

District State Qualifiers: 

C1 (Louisville): #1 Auburn defeated #6 Syracuse, 11-1

C2 (West Point): #2 GACC won 4-3 and 18-7 over #1 Arlington

C3 (Wahoo): #6 Milford upset #1 Bishop Neumann, 1-0

C4 (Central City): #2 Centennial defeated #1 Hastings St. Cecilia, 6-5

C6 (Lexington): postponed until Saturday
