WAYNE – After back-to-back early exits of the Class C1 state volleyball tournament, the Wayne High Blue Devils will look to take that next step as they began their 2020 campaign Thursday evening.
From the Wayne Jr/Sr High gymnasium, WHS welcomed in Ponca.
The Blue Devils recorded a home opening sweep of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-14 to begin their season at 1-0 while the Indians fell to 0-1.
Senior Lauren Pick posted a double-double with 21 kills and 13 digs while junior Rubie Klausen added six kills and seven digs for Wayne. Senior Emily Longe (three digs) and junior Madi Sievers (five digs) each added three kills while junior Sydney Redden paced the team in digs with 18 (one kill) and it was junior Kiara Krusemark totaling 32 assists and two kills. Freshman Katy Jones also had a kill as junior Raegan Backer finished with seven digs.
The Wayne High volleyball team will be off until next Thursday, September 3 and Saturday, September 5 when the team competes in the NE Nebraska Classic.
For Winside, the Wildcats began their season hosting Plainview and swept the Pirates 25-20, 25-21 and 25-11 opening the season at 1-0.
Senior Brooklyn Behmer recorded a team-high nine kills and finished with 10 set assists as well as six digs for Winside. Junior McKenna Russell tallied 15 set assists, eight kills, seven service aces and seven digs. Senior Hope Cummins added five kills, four solo blocks and four digs; senior Kati Topp also had five kills with three digs as senior Jaden Rastede finished with two kills, two set assists and two digs. Junior Ashelyn Abler paced the Wildcats in digs with 13.
Winside will next compete in the Howells-Dodge Round Robin this Saturday, August 29 in Dodge.
