Blue Devils Overcome First Quarter 10-Point Deficit, GACC Holds Off Wayne High

WEST POINT – The Wayne High girls capped off their fourth straight road game Monday night with Guardian Angels Central Catholic.

From the GACC Auditorium, the Bluejays hosted the WHS Blue Devils.

Early going GACC went on a 7-0 run before closing the opening quarter up 15-5. But, WHS stormed back to take the lead in the second quarter briefly outscoring the Bluejays (22-16). At the break, GACC led 31-27. Wayne cut into the deficit again with a 15-13 third before Guardian Angels Central Catholic held on for the 14-13 fourth to win the game 58-55. GACC won their third straight game to improve to 8-1 as Wayne fell to 2-5. WHS posted a 1-3 record over their last four games on the road.

Both teams combined for 15 made three point baskets (eight from GACC/seven from Wayne).

Wayne High was led in scoring by Ashton Boyer with 20 points (five made three’s) as Frankie Klausen provided 11 points. Tori Kniesche dominated the glass as her and Gabi Meyer poured in eight points each while Allison Claussen tacked on four points. Rubie Klausen and Kendall Dorey both tallied two points.

Wayne High finished 8-11 from the foul line (1-2 in second half).

Sophia Hass controlled the game for GACC with a 19-point performance but it was Greta Vering dominating off the bench with 12 points (three made three’s). Angela Jansen added seven points while Marissa Hunke and Reece Snodgrass both totaled six points.

The Bluejays finished 11-22 from the charity stripe.

GACC will visit Aquinas Catholic on Friday, December 21.

The Wayne High girls will close out their pre-holiday break with a home game also on Friday. WHS will host Lutheran High Northeast for parent’s night with varsity action scheduled for 7 p.m. The JV game will begin at 6 p.m. with two quarters being played as parents are asked to be at the gym by 6:30 p.m. for Parents Night.
