Blue Devils Outscore Homer By 13 Points In Second Half, Advance To C1-6 Semifinal

PIERCE – A team who saw an eight-game winning streak snapped going into the postseason being Homer, dropped back-to-back at the end of the year took on the Wayne High Blue Devils who had dropped eight of their previous 10 games entering the postseason Monday night.

From Pierce Public Schools, #5 Wayne High took on #4 Homer for the second time this season after Wayne defeated the Knights 61-37 on December 28 during the Wayne Holiday Tourney.

The play-in game was even early on before Wayne High outscored Homer, 26-13 in the final 16 minutes to win 53-40 during the Class C1-6 Subdistrict Tournament. WHS ended their four-game losing streak now at 7-18 as the Knights fell to 13-12 ending their season with three straight losses.

It was a back-and-forth first half with Wayne leading 16-11 in the opening quarter before Homer answered with their own 16-11 quarter. Both teams were knotted up at 27 all at the break. WHS then began to pull away thanks to an 18-10 third quarter and 8-3 fourth to win 53-40.

Junior Rubie Klausen went 3-4 from the foul line and made a pair of triples to lead WHS in scoring with 21 points. Sophomore Brooklyn Kruse was right behind with 19 points (3-6 FT) while freshman Kierah Haase finished with 11 points. Junior Kiara Krusemark also made two free throws for Wayne.

The Blue Devils finished 8-13 from the foul line.

For Homer, junior Hannah Elsea recorded 10 points while senior Emily Rasmussen poured in nine points for the Knights.

C1-6 Girls Subdistrict (Pierce): #5 Wayne defeated #4 Homer, 53-40 and will next face #1 Pierce at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16. The other semifinal on Tuesday will feature #2 Winnebago vs. #3 Battle Creek at 7:45 p.m.

 

C2-3 Subdistrict (West Point): #1 GACC (20-3) vs. #4 Tekamah-Herman (4-17) at 5 p.m. followed by #2 Howells-Dodge (10-12) vs. #3 Wisner-Pilger (8-13) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16.

 

C2-4 Subdistrict (Bancroft): #1 BRLD (17-4) vs. #4 Omaha Nation (3-16) at 5:30 p.m. followed by #2 Pender (15-7) vs. #3 Wakefield (13-11) at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16.

 

C2-5 Subdistrict (Crofton): #4 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge defeated #5 Creighton, 46-41 and will next face #1 Crofton (20-3) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16. The other semifinal on Tuesday will feature #2 Ponca (18-3) vs. #3 North Central (19-3) at 7:15 p.m.

 

D1-3 Subdistrict (Humphrey): #4 Osmond defeated #5 Wausa, 45-40 and will next face #1 Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family (16-4) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16. The other semifinal on Tuesday will feature #2 Plainview (10-11) vs. #3 Tri County Northeast (7-11) at 7:30 p.m.

 

D1-4 Subdistrict (Hartington): #5 Niobrara/Verdigre defeated #4 Bloomfield, 49-46 and will next face #1 Hartington Cedar Catholic (15-7) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16. The other semifinal on Tuesday will feature #2 Hartington-Newcastle (8-13) vs. #3 Boyd County (7-13) at 7:30 p.m.

D2-5 (Wynot): #4 Winside defeated #5 Walthill in Walthill, 63-23 and will next face #1 Wynot (16-6) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16. The other semifinal on Tuesday will feature #2 Randolph (6-12) vs. #3 Santee (7-6) at 7:30 p.m. in Wynot.
