HARTINGTON – The Wayne High boys continued a stretch of five straight road contests when they began conference tourney play Tuesday evening.
From Cedar Catholic high school in Hartington, the third-seeded Wayne High boys took on #6 Norfolk Catholic in round one of the Mid State Conference Tournament.
WHS defeated Norfolk Catholic 78-57 in Norfolk on January 9, 2020.
Tuesday night, the Blue Devils held an early 18-12 first quarter lead as the Knights stayed close with a 17-15 second quarter. At the break, Wayne led 33-29. Norfolk Catholic kept the game within a possession after winning the third quarter, 12-10 but Wayne High held on with a 14-12 fourth quarter. Final saw Wayne High win 57-53 to improve to 14-6 winning their fifth straight as Norfolk Catholic fell to 7-10.
Tyrus Eischeid paced Wayne High in scoring with 29 points and 10 rebounds followed by Shea Sweetland with 10 points. Other Blue Devil scoring came from Tanner Walling who fouled out with seven points, Cody Rogers added six points, Brandon Bartos tallied three points and Josh Lutt poured in two points.
Norfolk Catholic leaders were Ben Hammond with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Mason Timmerman fouled out with 13 points and Alex Lammers tacked on 11 points.
Also, in Hartington, #2 HCC defeated #7 O’Neill, 65-45.
Games were played in Battle Creek on the other half of the bracket. #1 Battle Creek topped #9 Boone Central/Newman Grove, 65-38 as #5 Pierce won against #4 GACC, 61-35.
Mid State Conference semifinal games will be played on Friday, February 7 with winner’s bracket games at Northeast Community College and loser’s bracket games at Norfolk Catholic high school.
NECC: Battle Creek vs. Pierce at 6:15 p.m. followed by HCC vs. WHS at 7:45 p.m.
NC: BC/NG vs. GACC at 6:15 p.m. followed by O’Neill vs. Norfolk Catholic at 7:45 p.m.
Mid State conference girls games will resume on Thursday, February 6.
