Blue Devils Get Their Own Walk-Off Victory, Sweep Home Triangular

WAYNE – Three varsity softball teams were in action Tuesday late afternoon into the evening during a home triangular for Wayne High.

From the Wayne Softball Complex, WHS hosted Bishop Neumann and Highway 91. After dropping two of three by way of walk-off from their opponent in eight innings over the weekend, WHS notched their own ‘W’ thanks to a big seventh inning against Bishop Neumann to win 2-1 before dominating Highway 91, 12-0. The Blue Devils are back on the winning track with a 7-3 record while the Cavaliers topped Highway 91 (7-3) to now sit 6-4 and Highway 91 drops to 4-5.

In the contest with Bishop Neumann, both teams were scoreless entering the fifth where the Cavaliers struck first with a run in the top half of the inning. After another scoreless inning Wayne brought in two runs during the bottom of the seventh to win in walk-off fashion, 2-1.

Both Kayla Fleming and Nicole Fertig accounted for a single and RBI in the seventh with Fleming recording the walk-off hit for Wayne. Brooklyn Kruse singled twice and Amara Hurlbert added a single.

Tori Kniesche picked up the complete game no-hitter win in seven innings allowing an earned run while striking out 19 batters and walking one.

From the game against Highway 91, the Blue Devils scored early and often starting with a six-run opening inning. WHS then added four runs in the second and two in the third to win 12-0.

Tori Kniesche took control from the plate with two singles and a solo home run totaling three RBI for Wayne. Kendall Dorey and Fleming also singled as Aliah Schulz accounted for two RBI and Hailey Schroeder one.

Tori Kniesche picked up the win striking out eight of nine batters faced (one ground out).

The Wayne High softball team will continue their home stretch on Thursday, September 5 hosting South Sioux City. Back at the Wayne Softball Complex action will get underway at 5:30 p.m. with a varsity contest only as the JV game was cancelled.
