NELIGH – With a few invitationals remaining on the schedule, the Wayne High wrestling team took to the road competing in a weekend invite.
From Neligh-Oakdale high school, WHS joined 21 other scoring teams during the Neligh-Oakdale Invite Saturday.
Boone Central/Newman Grove won the invite with 141 points, followed by Crofton-Bloomfield in second with 133.5 points, Elkhorn Valley took third with 128 points, Neligh-Oakdale placed fourth with 123 points and Wayne rounded out the top five teams with 112 points.
Other team scoring came from Creighton (sixth – 86), Nebraska Christian (seventh – 85), North Central (eighth – 82.5), High Plains Community (ninth – 78.5), Axtell (10th – 67), Summerland (11th – 63.5), Central Valley (12th – 51), West Holt (13th – 49), Franklin (14th – 39), Pleasanton (15th – 36), Kenesaw (16th – 33), BRLD and Lutheran High Northeast (T-17th – 28), Sumner-Eddyville-Miller (19th – 23), Fullerton (20th – 18), Osmond (21st – 16) and Niobrara/Verdigre (22nd – 7). Clarkson/Leigh, Elgin/Pope John and St. Mary’s all recorded no points.
The Blue Devils were led by Mike Leatherdale winning the heavyweight division, Dakota Spann (182) finished second, Reid Korth (170) and Cade Janke (195) both took third, Martin Carrillo (220) finished fifth and Ashton Munsell (120) placed sixth.
Crofton-Bloomfield leaders were William Poppe (132), Jared Janssen (220) and Madison Petersen (132 Girls) all won their divisions, Hudson Barger (106) placed runner-up, Tyson Sauser (138) took third, Stran Sage (160) and Paxton Bartels (285) both finished fourth as Calvin Dather (182) placed fifth.
The Wayne High wrestlers will next visit Winside for a road dual on Tuesday, January 28 at 7 p.m. Other upcoming events for WHS is the Plainview Invite on Saturday, February 1; Mid State Conference Tourney at Battle Creek on Thursday, February 6; Norfolk Catholic Tournament on Saturday, February 8 and districts on Friday and Saturday, February 14-15. NSAA State Wrestling Individual Championships will be held in Omaha from Thursday, February 20 – Saturday, February 22.
