Blue Devils Fall Tuesday, Prepare For Back-To-Back Road Games In Early September

WAYNE – For the sixth straight time early in the season, the Wayne High softball team competed on their home diamond.

From the Wayne Softball Complex, it was a Class C showdown Tuesday night as WHS welcomed in Bishop Neumann.

The visiting Cavaliers broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning with a two-run homerun and pulled away for the 10-2 victory. Bishop Neumann won their eighth consecutive game to now sit 8-1 while WHS had their four game winning streak snapped falling to 4-2.

After both teams scored a run in the opening inning, Bishop Neumann used a three-run second inning and then outscored WHS, 4-1 in the fourth inning to lead 8-2. Following a scoreless fifth, the Cavaliers scored two more runs in the top of the sixth and won 10-2 in six innings.

Errors stacked up for the Blue Devil who finished with eight to go along with eight hits. Bishop Neumann tallied 12 hits.

Nyla Bolles singled twice and scored twice; Delaney Kruse singled twice and drove in two runs while Taytem Ellis doubled for Wayne. Jersi Jensen, McKenzie Nissen and Reagan McGuire all singled.

Sammi Gubbels (33) suffered the loss in an inning and two-thirds allowing four runs (three earned) off five hits while striking out one batter. Nissen (64) worked the final four and a third allowing six runs (four earned) off seven hits while striking out one batter and walking three.


Kya Swartz recorded a two-run homerun for Bishop Neumann while multi-hit performers were Grace Schulz (three runs scored); Aubrey Sylliaasen (two RBI/one run scored); Avery Mayberry (RBI and run scored) as well as Bridget Whitney (two RBI) each with two singles.

Addison Sylliaasen (112) picked up the complete game victory in six innings allowing two earned runs off eight hits while striking out eight batters and walking two.

The Wayne High softball team will get their first taste of road competition on Thursday, September 1 at South Sioux City before also visiting Columbus Lakeview on Tuesday, September 6. Bishop Neumann will next host Fort Calhoun on Thursday.
