Blue Devils Crowned Champions During Home Invite

WAYNE – The Wayne High Softball program bounced back from a season-opening home loss by sweeping their home invitational this past weekend.

From the Summer Sports Complex, WHS welcomed in a handful of teams for a one-day, three-game tourney Saturday.

Wayne High opened with a 10-0 victory over Ponca before edging Twin River, 4-2 in the semifinal round. The Blue Devils then held off Highway 91, 6-2 in the championship game to now sit 3-1 on the season.

In the first round victory over Ponca, Wayne High scored once in the opening inning before posting a six-run second inning to lead 7-0. WHS then added three more runs in the third to win 10-0.

Kendall Dorey singled, doubled and drove in a run while Mikaela McManigal singled, drove in two runs and scored twice for Wayne. Brianna Nissen singled and drove in two runs; Taytum Sweetland singled and scored; Logan Miller singled; Kierah Haase and Nikki Fertig both scored as Hailey Schroeder and Hope O’Reilly both scored twice.

Dorey picked up the no-hit win in four innings striking out nine batters and walking one.

During the semifinal round, Wayne scored twice in the home half of the third before both teams scored a run in the fourth. The Blue Devils added one run in the fifth and held Twin River to one run in the top of the sixth as WHS won 4-2.

Brooklyn Kruse doubled and drove in two runs while McManigal singled and drove in a run for Wayne. Virginia Kniesche doubled; Dorey singled; O’Reilly scored twice as Sweetland and Nissen each crossed the plate once.

Dorey picked up the compete game win in six innings allowing two runs (one earned) off three hits while striking out eight batters and walking three.

From the championship win, Wayne took an early 3-1 lead in the first inning. Following a pair of scoreless innings, both teams scored once in the fourth as WHS extended their lead in the top of the fifth with two runs and won 6-2.

Nissen singled twice, drove in two runs and scored while Dorey singled and doubled for Wayne. Brooklyn Kruse singled and drove in a run; O’Reilly doubled and scored; Haase and Miller both singled as Delaney Kruse; Fertig, Schroeder and Sweetland all scored.

Dorey picked up the complete game win in five innings allowing two runs off two hits while striking out nine batters and walking three.
