WAYNE – With a two-day tournament slated for next week, the Wayne High volleyball program opened their season on the home court.
From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, Class C1 Wayne welcomed in Class C2 Ponca Thursday evening.
The visiting Indians picked up the sweep in straight sets of 25-19, 25-15, 25-17 to start their season at 1-0 while Wayne High fell to 0-1.
Kate Hill recorded a team-high nine kills and 15 digs followed by Amelia Legler with eight kills, one dig and one block for Wayne. Emma Forsythe and Haley Kramer both added four kills. Anna Kaup led the team in assists with 13 and joined Gabbi Judd (one block/five digs) with one kill each. Other dig leaders came from Jacen Hasemann (eight), Haley Kramer (six) and Faith Powicki (five).
Forsythe and Hill both posted a service ace for WHS.
The Wayne High volleyball team will next compete in the NEN Jean Groth Volleyball Classic hosted by Wisner-Pilger and Pender on Thursday, September 1 and Saturday, September 3. Ponca will compete in their home-opener next Tuesday, August 30 welcoming in Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.
NEN Tourney: Each first match starts at 5:30 p.m., next scheduled an hour later.
