LEXINGTON – For the second straight year the Wayne High volleyball team took part in District Final action.
After being swept by North Bend Central a year ago, #9 Wayne met #8 Mitchell in Lexington during the Class C1-8 District Final Saturday.
Wayne High jumped out front winning the opening two sets (25-14, 25-22) before the Tigers got on the board with a 25-22 win in the third set. WHS closed out the day with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set. The Blue Devils are now 25-9 on the season while Mitchell ended their year at 22-7.
2018 marks the ninth time Wayne has qualified for state and the first in five years. WHS was swept by Ogallala in 2013. The Blue Devils have won only twice in the first round (2002 and 1988).
Wayne double-doubles came from Lauren Pick with 17 kills and 32 digs to go with two blocks (one solo), Emily Armstrong with 13 kills and 26 digs as well as Ashton Boyer with 10 kills and 12 digs. Kiara Krusemark added 24 set assists and nine digs while Allyson Avery tallied 21 assists. Katelyn Grone tacked on a solo block as service aces came from Boyer and Krusemark (three each), Erin O’Reilly (two) and Armstrong and Pick (one each).
Wayne High has earned the #8 seed and will take on #1 Wahoo (32-3) on Thursday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. from Lincoln North Star. Other C1 first round matches Thursday from LNS will feature #3 St. Paul (33-1) vs. #6 Syracuse (26-3) at 1:30 p.m.; #2 Lincoln Lutheran (32-3) vs. #7 Columbus Scotus (19-9) at 3:30 p.m. and #4 Bishop Neumann (29-3) vs. #5 Grand Island Central Catholic (30-4) at 5:30 p.m.
